Spring in Mongolia is not a gentle season in the classic sense. It is a time of transition — sometimes harsh, often spectacular — when winter slowly loosens its grip and the vast steppe begins to breathe again.

From March to May, the landscapes change almost week by week: snow retreats, rivers begin to thaw, herds move again, young animals are born around nomadic camps, and the first soft colors return to the valleys.

For travelers looking for a quieter, wilder and more intimate Mongolia than the busy summer months, spring can be a truly beautiful time to visit — as long as you are well prepared.

When does spring begin in Mongolia?

In Mongolia, spring usually runs from March to May. But it should not be imagined as a European-style spring. Here, the season often begins with cold weather, freezing nights, wind and sometimes snow, before gradually turning into brighter and more comfortable days.

March still feels like winter in many parts of the country, especially in Ulaanbaatar and central Mongolia. April marks the real transition: temperatures rise, but the weather remains unpredictable and windy. May is often the most pleasant spring month for travel, as the steppe starts to turn green and the days become longer and milder.

Spring in Mongolia is a season of contrasts: a cold, dusty morning can turn into a bright afternoon, followed by a freezing evening under an endless sky. This is also what makes the Mongolian spring so unique.

What is the weather like in spring?

Weather is the most important thing to understand before traveling to Mongolia in spring. The country has an extreme continental climate, with large temperature differences between day and night and rapidly changing conditions depending on the region.

In Ulaanbaatar, March can still be very cold, with freezing nighttime temperatures. In April, days become milder, but nights remain chilly. By May, the weather is usually much more comfortable, although warm clothing is still necessary in the evening.

Wind is also a major feature of the season. In the steppe and the Gobi Desert, dust episodes can occur, especially in April and May. This does not make travel impossible, but it does require good planning, a flexible itinerary and suitable clothing.

March: still winter

March is cold and very dry. It can be an interesting time for experienced travelers, but it requires serious preparation against the cold.

🌬️

April: unpredictable but fascinating

April is when the landscapes slowly begin to wake up. Days are brighter, but the wind can be strong. It is a month for travelers who enjoy raw and authentic atmospheres.

🌱

May: the best spring compromise

May is often the best spring month to visit Mongolia. Temperatures rise, the landscapes begin to turn green, nomadic families are active, and routes become easier to travel.

The steppe slowly comes back to life

Spring in Mongolia is a season of renewal. After months of extreme cold, the steppe starts to come alive again. Short grass returns, rivers break free from the ice, and herds gradually find better grazing areas.

For nomadic families, this is an essential time of year. It is the season of newborn animals: lambs, kids, foals and young yaks appear around the camps. The days are intense, as herders must protect the most fragile animals while preparing for seasonal movements.

For travelers, witnessing this period offers a deeper understanding of Mongolia. It is not only about landscapes, but about the constant relationship between people, animals, climate and the immensity of the land.

"In spring, Mongolia does not reveal itself all at once. It appears slowly — through cold winds, golden light and the first signs of life across the steppe."

Why travel to Mongolia in spring?

Spring is not the easiest season in Mongolia, but it is one of the most sincere. Unlike summer, when the main tourist sites welcome more visitors, spring offers a quieter and almost confidential atmosphere.

The landscapes are not as green as in July, but they have a different kind of beauty: mineral colors, valleys still marked by winter, clear skies and beautiful light for photography.

It is also a good time for travelers who want to experience nomadic life in a real context. Families are not performing for tourism: they are simply living through one of the most demanding seasons of the year, caring for animals, moving camps and preparing for warmer days.

The advantages

  • → Fewer travelers than in summer
  • → Very active nomadic life
  • → Newborn animals around camps
  • → Beautiful light for photography
  • → A quieter and more authentic atmosphere

What to expect

  • → Variable temperatures
  • → Cold nights
  • → Possible wind and dust
  • → Some tourist camps closed before late May
  • → Itinerary adjustments depending on weather

Where to go in Mongolia in spring?

The right itinerary depends strongly on the month of travel. In March, it is usually better to choose short and well-organized trips around Ulaanbaatar, Terelj or Hustai. In April, itineraries can be extended, but flexibility remains important. In May, several regions become much more pleasant to explore.

Hustai National Park is a beautiful spring option for observing Przewalski's horses, known as takhi in Mongolian. Terelj offers spectacular rock formations close to the capital. The Gobi Desert can also be considered towards the end of spring, when temperatures become more comfortable, although wind can still be present.

In western Mongolia, Bayan-Ölgii offers a unique cultural atmosphere, especially through the Kazakh community. Around the spring equinox, some families celebrate Nauryz, the Kazakh New Year — a festival of renewal, sharing and family meals.

Practical tips for spring travel

Traveling to Mongolia in spring requires a little more preparation than traveling in summer. But with a good itinerary, suitable clothing and a local agency able to adapt the program if needed, this season can offer a very powerful travel experience.

The most important thing is not to underestimate temperature differences. Even in May, evenings can be cold. You should also prepare for wind, sun exposure and dust, especially in open steppe areas and in the Gobi.

🧥

Dress in layers

Bring a thermal base layer, fleece, windproof jacket and a light down jacket. Layering is essential in Mongolia.

🕶️

Protect yourself from wind and dust

Sunglasses, moisturizing cream, lip balm and a scarf or neck gaiter can make a big difference on windy days.

🚙

Keep your itinerary flexible

In spring, some tracks may be muddy, snowy or difficult depending on the region. A good local driver and an adaptable program are essential.

Prepare your camera

Spring offers pure light, powerful nomadic scenes and quieter landscapes than the high season. It is a beautiful period for travel photography.

Spring or summer: which season should you choose?

If this is your very first trip to Mongolia and you want the easiest travel conditions, summer remains the most comfortable period, especially from June to September. Roads are more accessible, tourist camps are open, and major festivals such as Naadam attract many visitors.

But if you enjoy quieter, more raw and more local travel experiences, spring is truly worth considering. It does not show Mongolia at its easiest, but it shows the country in a deeply authentic way.

In short: choose summer for comfort and green landscapes. Choose spring for intimacy, light, encounters and the feeling of watching an entire country wake up.

Spring

  • → March to May
  • → Quieter and more authentic
  • → More unpredictable weather
  • → Very active nomadic life
  • → Ideal for curious travelers
